THE FRUIT OF THE TREE
when the apple trees are bearing
sweet fruit that’s worth a mile-long hike,
and the afternoon for sharing.
We will know the apples trees we seek
by the goodness they are yielding,
by the bounty they have rich in store,
and the fragrance all so pleasing.
But the trees that have no tasty fruit
and are pleasant not for eyeing,
offer branches that are mostly bare,
and some look as though they’re dying!
In the rosy light, we’ll choose the best,
and our baskets we’ll be filling;
the love of Jesus in our hearts
will, with grace, be over-spilling!
THE FRUIT OF THE TREE
Autumn is underway here in Veery Glade with
distinct fragrances—apples, rain, cool mornings, cups of coffee, and roasting
from the oven. The Creator of seasons is in control.
A tree is known by its fruit. A person is known by his or her heart. Day by day, season by season, God is available through prayer to help us become more like Him.
Like a person broken down by the road, we must wave our arms for assistance. We must pray with a believing heart that our Heavenly Father is able to help us.
God, who created the earth and heaven (and time), is fully equipped to sooth our hearts and lift distress, to encourage and sustain, and to provide and deliver. Continue to practice prayer daily for your family, church family, and government. Pray for people who have lost their loved ones due to floods or fires or other awful calamities. Pray for our persecuted brothers and sisters. Pray for pastors.
Proof that God is always available.
We read in the Old and New Testaments of the Bible that God is pleased with the aroma of sacrifice.
And Noah builded an altar unto
the LORD; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered
burnt offerings on the altar.
of spikenard, very costly,
and anointed the feet of Jesus,
and wiped his feet with her hair:
and the house was filled with the
odour of the ointment.
John 12:3
As we think on these verses while hiking with our baskets and great expectations, we are reminded that the meekness displayed to us by Christ should be reason enough to be meek to others. God sent His Son as an offering for our sins. Being obedient unto death on the cross, Jesus made purification for our sins by laying down His life for us. He went, even knowing not everyone would choose to believe. But those who do are free from sin! Purified. So much rides on belief.
On the woodland trail, there is a wild apple orchard where some apples are good to eat and where fallen apples are crushed under foot. The smell permeates the air. May the fragrance we love be the same God loves as we pick good apples. May we earnestly pray, waving our arms daily with great expectations, because of Jesus’ meekness.
